Warning: This is not a meal for the faint of heart… or the health nuts. I’m sure most of you all know about Ree Drummond’s very awesome blog, The Pioneer Woman. Ree was a city girl who married a cowboy, and now she’s blogging about food, life, and photography from a ranch in Oklahoma. It’s a great premise for a blog, but her wit, knowledge, and beautiful photos are really what make it so delightful! Ree has a new television show now too, which just starting airing on Food Network. I am loving it! I decided to try out the meal she made on her first episode: Sliders and Macaroni & Cheese, along with a “sliders bar” of toppings which can go on both the burgers and the mac & cheese! As you can see, we went more with full out burgers over sliders.
Ree loves using butter, but I must say, I substituted olive oil a few times when possible. The macaroni and cheese was to die for. I somehow couldn’t find my dry mustard spice (did I imagine that I owned it?), but as the recipe suggested, a mixture of cayenne pepper and thyme worked wonderfully. By the way, I love how Ree pleads: “DO NOT UNDERSALT.” Butter may make me nervous, but I sure do love my salt.
YUM. This mac & cheese recipe is going to be a staple in our household (or apartmenthold?) from now on! Ree said it’s all she ate growing up, and that’s how she has her strong bones now.
As suggested, I had onions, bacon, and blue cheese for the fixings. We mostly put them on our burgers, but they would have been great on the mac & cheese as well! For some reason, I bought blue cheese instead of gorgonzola… it was a little strong for the combo, so next time I’ll stick with a gorgonzola, as was suggested.
Annndddd… Mr. Black’s Concoction is back! Back in June, my Screwtop girls and I tried out this amazing wine and were blown away! On the way out that night, I bought a bottle for Chris and I to drink together sometime. This was a great meal to showcase it, as the complexity is brought out even more with strong cheeses and red meat. Everyone needs to go out and buy this wine immediately! Chris, my girlfriends, and I (and Screwtop says it’s a crowd favorite too!) are all huge fans. Delish!
