We went back to an old favorite for my birthday a few weeks ago, Acqua Al 2. The original location of this restaurant is actually in Florence! We even walked by it on our honeymoon! Unfortunately, that day on our trip, we needed an early dinner and the restaurant wasn’t open yet… the Italians eat much later in the evening. :)
Anyway, the only locations are in Florence, San Diego, and DC. Acqua Al 2 is a truly authentic treasure of a restaurant and a frequent birthday choice of mine! Chris and I were introduced to the place by our local foodie friend, Judd, who kindly brought us there to celebrate our engagement. My go-to dish (to split) is the five course vegetarian pasta sampler. I can’t think of anything better than meatless, flavorful pasta! I must bring my sister to Acqua Al 2 at some point since we share this same love.
Chris and I branched out on this past visit and tried one of the specials as a starter, the Burrata com Pompelmo Rosa (Burrata with Pink Grapefruit). I just can’t get enough of burrata these days. Besides burrata (a fresh Italian cheese made up of mozzarella and cream), the dish included small slices of grapefruit, pine nuts, drizzled honey, and fresh black pepper. So simple, but so decadent!
I decided to remake it at home, and think it would be a fabulous, easy appetizer to serve for company. I bought all of the ingredients at Trader Joe’s (of course), but I am sure there is even fresher and creamier burrata to be found at The Italian Store in Arlington.
Simply place the burrata in the center of a plate, arrange grapefruit slices (use more than you see pictured here – you’ll want it!) and pine nuts around, then drizzle honey and crackle fresh black pepper to finish it off. The ensemble reminded me of the recent endives with pomegranate seeds, goat cheese, honey, and black pepper appetizer that I tried out. Both of these dishes are like your own personal summery cheese plate in a bite!
