What do you dream about when the work week is feeling long? I dream about going to happy hour with a girlfriend. Usually, this means Amuse at Le Meridien in Rosslyn or Fireworks in Courthouse, but it’s fun to branch out too. My friend Lindsay lives right near Old Town Alexandria, an area that I really want to explore further. A few weeks ago, she was kind enough to pick me up from the metro after work on a Friday and introduce me to one of her neighborhood spots, Society Fair.
With locations in both Alexandria and Arlington, Society Fair is a French-inspired bakery, butchery, wine bar, market, and demo kitchen compilation. The setting feels bistro-like with a palette of black, white, and pops of hot pink. The perfect girly place to catch up!
Lindsay ordered the happy hour cocktail of the day, a “summer punch” whiskey-based fruity beverage, while I went with an Italian white wine. We couldn’t help straying off of the specials menu to try out a feta dip accompanied by sliced veggies, lettuce, and pita chips. This combination inspired me when it comes to vehicles for dips… why not serve BOTH healthy vegetables and the carb treats that we are craving? Eat what you really want with the dip along with what makes you feel a little better about yourself. I kept this in mind when I served homemade hummus a few days later.
I was especially hungry, so I also ordered myself a three crostini sampler off of the happy hour menu: ricotta + garlicky lemon kale, roasted red peppers + onions, and red beets + fresh chèvre. I especially enjoyed the flavorful kale piece! A great way to tide me over until dinner.
Society Fair really has a lot going on — and it’s exciting. On our way inside, we walked by groups at patio tables, then eavesdropped a bit on an intimate cooking class at the bar while we enjoyed our sips and bites. Afterwards, we perused the cute, artisan shop and each left with a reasonably-priced bottle of wine to bring home.
Thanks, Lindsay, for introducing me to such a fun place! I can’t wait to go back for another round of feta dip — and to try out more items on the menu as well. This might be a good brunch spot to explore at some point in the near future too…
