We can be such creatures of habit. I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but even though we live in the middle of a thriving and ever-changing restaurant scene, Chris and I often end up going to the same places to eat. In Arlington, we love Fuego, Green Pig, Screwtop, and Fireworks. Sometimes you’ll find us at Sushi Rock for a happy hour dinner and I was surprised to realize that I was at Bracket Room twice this month, but for the most part, we stick to our same go-to spots.
I am so excited that my brother, John, moved to Arlington this Fall! We haven’t maximized our new neighbor situation enough thus far, but I have high hopes for the months ahead. Anyway, to get back to the food story, John’s girlfriend came to visit one weekend and he suggested that the four of us try out Bayou Bakery together for breakfast. Bayou Bakery is just a few short blocks away from where Chris and I have lived for almost four years now! Yet we had never been. (Well, Chris had stopped by to pick up some pastries, but that’s about it.)
Bayou Bakery, in a nutshell, serves Louisiana-style comfort food. For breakfast, this means biscuit sandwiches galore! I must admit that I was a bit wary since I don’t always love New Orleans cuisine, but I sure liked this place. First of all, the environment is cozy, with an aura that makes me think of a hip coffee house. When it’s warm outside, as it was (somewhat) on this particular Saturday, there is a great corner patio area to be enjoyed.
For a reasonable price, we ordered coffee, a side of potatoes, various biscuit sandwiches, and beignets (you have to!). As the wind blew beignet powder all over us, we had a great time catching up and enjoying the crisp weather of the season. Afterwards, we sent John and Ava off to their apple-picking plans and I thought how wonderful it would be to hunker down with homework at Bayou Bakery. Though I ended up being pretty lazy and uncreative with my study locations this past semester, I do hope to make homework happen here at some point in the new year.
We stopped by Bayou Bakery again more recently for takeout lunch. Chris and I tried some sandwiches and a side of mac ‘n’ cheese. The lunch food was fine, but I do think the breakfast biscuits and beignets are still my favorite!
