“I’m sorry I have to go right now, but I really need to make some popcorn!” I said to my family via FaceTime, which was greeted by an eruption of laughter. My dad and I LOVE freshly popped popcorn as a late night snack. We both make it in our homes several times a week after dinner. A glass of wine, popcorn with olive oil + sea salt, and a funny TV show – this is my recipe for the perfect relaxing night. When I shared with my family that I needed to go make popcorn, it came across as a terribly mundane excuse to end a conversation! However, this was no ordinary popcorn…
In October’s issue of Bon Appétit, I stumbled on a fabulous recipe: Spiced Popcorn with Pecans and Raisins. At first, I flagged it thinking it would be a great snack to have on hand when Chris’ family comes to visit next week. Then, as the holidays got closer and I needed some small gifts to distribute, I thought… this recipe would be perfect to give to coworkers and our bible study! I envisioned cute little bags tied with festive twine and tags, with labels noting the content and the ingredients. (I made this popcorn vegan with Earth Balance butter, so I wanted that to shine for those who needed to know!)
Often when I have an image in my mind of something crafty, the end result looks MUCH different. However, these little gifts turned out well, and with low drama preparation too.
I don’t know about you, but I am eating so much right now between holiday festivities, the cold weather making me crave hearty food, and our office providing constant meal catering (around longer hours with our fiscal year end). Anyway, I’ve made chocolate bark as gifts several times before, but this year, I wanted to do something flavorful and light. I will mention that the popcorn turned out to be quite spicy – but maybe we all need some spice to clear ourselves out with colds going around! Turmeric is also a pretty intense spice visually. Maybe it was my imagination, but my hands seemed a little orange the next day. It adds beautiful color and flavor to the popcorn though.
Make this special popcorn as a snack for family and friends, as little gifts to give a group, or as party favors!
