If you’ve been on this website in the past 24 hours or so, you may have noticed a new name at the top of the screen!
When I first started this blog in May 2011, I wrote under the title “the view from the eleventh floor,” which I quickly shortened to just “eleventh floor view” a few months later. I was excited to get the domain eleventhfloorview.com in September 2011, and besides a sporadic design update or two each year, I’ve just been sailing along ever since!
Even though we moved into a new Arlington building in 2013 and now live on a different numerical floor, I have still loved having “eleventh floor” in the blog title. I feel nostalgic when I think about how our first two years of marriage were spent in a little apartment on the 11th floor. The height that the number connotes–even though many buildings around here go much higher!–also captures the high-rise nature of Arlington well.
The word I have wanted to change for some time now is “view.” Sometimes, when people first hear of my blog, they automatically assume that we must have a nice view from our place. We didn’t really when we lived in our first apartment, and we don’t really now! When I came up with the name, I was thinking, again, about the distant view of a high rise building, and of my own view as a writer of this blog.
To get to the point here, besides some occasional posts inspired by my grad school program, this really is a food blog. I write about what I’m cooking (mostly clean, “real food“), where we are dining out in our local area, and our travel adventures (focusing on our food experiences!). I wanted to come up with a NEW name that reflected all these things… and so, I am excited to announce… eleventh floor provisions!
Where is “provisions” coming from? First, I love that the word carries with it a sense of simplicity. While I do like to try complicated dishes sometimes, I also believe in the basics when it comes to food. Quality, real ingredients with high nutritional value. Fresh vegetables. Generous olive oil and spices.
I also love the word, because it has to do with the supplying of something–especially food!–and the means for meeting a need. When I think of providing food for those I love, I think about the privilege of creating a means for sharing life together. Yes, cooking a meal helps to supply food to meet everyone’s physical needs, but eating with others is also a true glimpse of heaven. We are transported away from everyday weights and distractions, just focused together in conversation and in community.
Thanks for reading! I’m looking forward to more writing, cooking, and eating in 2015!
