Thanks to a recommendation from Chris’ uncle, we had a great breakfast in Greenwich Village at an oatmeal and oat-centric place called OatMeals on our recent trip to NYC. In my mind, I kept thinking of OatMeals as an “oatmeal bar,” though that’s not quite correct. OatMeals isn’t set up with ingredients lined up in front of you like at a fro-yo place, but you can order countless different arrangements of oatmeal!
On the menu, there is a whole page of different ingredients to select — or you can choose from their lengthy list of favorite combinations. The most surprising thing to me was the number of savory ingredients. Chris actually ordered the Croque Monsieur oatmeal, which includes diced ham, shaved gruyere cheese, nutmeg, sea salt, cracked black pepper, and steamed milk. We shared a Fig & Gorgonzola oatmeal, comprised of crumbled gorgonzola, dried figs, and a balsamic vinegar glaze. That one may have been a little intense for me!
The main oatmeal I ate and really enjoyed was the Antioxidant Awakening, adorned with hearty Greek yogurt, dried pomegranate seeds, chia seeds, chocolate chips, and honey. So delicious!
OatMeals serves pretty good coffee as well, from Porto Rico Importing Co. As someone who avoids regular milk, I also appreciated that you can order your oatmeal made with other options like water, almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
As Chris and I sat with our coffees waiting for my parents to join us, a fit man with white hair and sunglasses walked in and ordered plain oatmeal with milk. As I casually watched him, I realized… it was Anderson Cooper! Apparently Anderson lives across the street from Chris’ uncle in Greenwich Village. I was glad to see that he enjoyed OatMeals as well.
If there was an OatMeals near us in D.C. or Arlington, I would be there all the time! I love all of the creative combinations – and even just the idea of eating a well-made oatmeal with typical toppings is pretty exciting. I am inspired to get into oatmeal now. Perhaps I’ll print out OatMeals’ menu and try some of their ideas at home!
