MUNCIE, Ind. — A 10-year-old Delaware County girl has died of severe injuries suffered Monday afternoon when a go-kart she was operating collided head-on with a UTV carrying two other children.
The accident, on property in the 7700 block of West Delaware County Road 850-N, was reported to emergency dispatchers at 4:22 p.m.
John Gano, an Indiana conservation officer, confirmed the child's death on Tuesday morning. The girl's name was not released pending notification of family members, he said.
According to Jeff Stanley, chief deputy of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, the 10-year-old girl's go-kart collided head-on with a side-by-side UTV occupied by a 10-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl.
The 10-year-old girl was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was placed in a medical helicopter for flight to an Indianapolis hospital. Gano said she was taken to Payton Manning Children's Hospital.
Police blocked intersections between the accident scene and the Muncie hospital to speed the ambulance's trip.
The sheriff's department's crash reconstruction team was helping Indiana conservation officers with their investigation of the crash.
Gano confirmed the girl's death was the result of head injuries. He said the children were operating the recreation vehicles on a path on property where the girl's father lived.
Authorities said none of the children were wearing helmets. Parents were reportedly present when the accident took place.
The children on the UTV suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
Gaston and Eaton police were also at the scene in the aftermath of the crash.
